Best Books for Business

¹6(12) (21.10.2006)

Price is what you pay. Value is what you acquire.
Warren Buffett

This book contains over 100 reviews on business literature.

Why did I decide to write such a big work on business literature? Partly it was due to the story of one of my favourite authors, Charles Handy, about the beginning of his literary career: “I began from reading everything that my competitors had written and came to the conclusion that books on business were often full of good ideas but boring to their readers. I remembered my own advice to entrepreneurs: do not try to do something better, do it in a different way”. Having studied the choice of literature on this subject in bookshops, I saw that there were no reference books of this kind in the literary market.

My competitors are only English speaking authors.

Among the best I would like to name Stuart Kreiner, the author of the book Library of selected works on business. Books that created management; Joseph and Jimmy Boyett, whose two books Guide in the kingdom of wisdom. Best ideas of management masters and Guide in the kingdom of wisdom. Best ideas of the greatest entrepreneurs were published like the first book by Olymp-Business publishing house; Management magic by John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge, and also I want to mention Management guru. Who is who in the business elite by Carol Kennedy published jointly by ÀSÒ è Transitkniga publishing houses.

Readers’ aspirations

Working on this book I tried to do my best to answer the interests of my readers who often want to grasp as much information as they can but do not have enough time. I divide readers into the following “groups”:

amateurs wander in bookshops, browse through books, sigh and go straight to ordinary or virtual libraries. There are many present and former scientists and researchers among them;

  • professional amateurs rush into bookshops in the hope of fishing out and buying two or three useful books for their thesis, essay or dissertation. Among them we can find working senior students and many different business course listeners, including MBA. All of them are either present or future leaders;
  • professionals schedule their visits to bookshops. They want to have enough time to peruse the book they are interested in. Or they order the book on-line as with the amount of on-line bookshops it is not a problem any more. In this group there are businessmen, representatives of creative professions, mass media people, different consultants and free-lance workers - that is all those people who help companies’ leaders to earn big money;
  • aesthetes before entering a bookshop like to sit in a cafe over a cup of coffee, to learn the news and read their mail. They know the author of the book well and they buy for pleasure and not for work. We can rank among them those people who have retired and enjoy life. Believe me, there are such people!

I suggest the following method of assessing each book I have read. This is a general scheme of the method:

BOOK’S DOZEN

Maximum score – 12

The assessment of Mark Tangate’s book:

EXPERIENCE OF PROBLEM SOLUTION 4
Personal experience of problem solution.
Other people’s experience systematization

DEVELOPMENT OF BUSINESS THINKING 4

APPLICATION IN PRACTICE 3
