Coaching: a new managerial approach, a life style and means of managing people and communicating with them

¹6(12) (21.10.2006)

Èðèíà ßêîâëåâà“A coach is a person who helps you take the course of your life
in your own hands and make sure that you fully realize your potential”
Thomas Leonard

In order to get the greatest output from people one must believe in their latent abilities, understand their potential, and not judge them by the effectiveness of their previous performance. Coaching is a method of managing and interacting with people. It is a way of thinking and being.

Nowadays corporate development is strongly dependent on the development of every team and its members. Any manager or entrepreneur is eager to further his company. The coaching approach, by creating training and self-training organizations, helps people and teams develop much faster.

Can a manager become a coach?

Can a manager become a coach? Yes, but it requires managers’ best qualities – compassion, honesty and impartiality, and in most cases they must be willing to accept a fundamentally new approach to their personnel.

If a manager acts on the principle of coaching he does two things – provides the highest quality of work and at the same time develops the employees. The manager’s aim is to organize the work process effectively and train his personnel. The latter is usually limited by time and cost. Coaching is a process that solves both tasks.

Having chosen the coaching style of management, the company also undergoes changes in organizational culture. Here the hierarchy gives way to support, reproof is substituted by honest appraisal, and the outside motives are replaced by self-motivation. People are not afraid of changes any more, on the contrary, they greet them. Their main aim becomes not to satisfy their chief managers but to render services to their customers. The pressure of work turns into a challenge, and emergency jobs in “burn out” style are substituted by long-term strategic thinking. These are only some of the characteristics of the newly born business culture, and every business will have its own originality and priorities.

The essence of coaching is to offer an advanced stage of effectiveness by changing the method of attack. The objectives of good coaching are full awareness and deep responsibility, which are a state of one’s mind, and our mind is a key to creative activity in all spheres. Nowadays coaching is effectively used in all fields where necessary. Unlike the way it is in a traditional tutorship, coaching is aimed not at giving a person advice or consultation from the position of an expert, but at letting him solve the problem for himself, find ways of motivation, schedule the actions he needs to undertake to expand his awareness, to achieve success and self-realization.

The experts of the Stockholm School of Economics offer their listeners coach training directed to the search of solution, the achievement of individual and collective aims in different areas of life, the formation of an effective life strategy and a clear system concerning their aims. This approach helps you develop and polish the skills that are necessary for you to realize your creative abilities and to increase your personal effectiveness.

Coaching will help you make a solution search creative and will support your determination in achieving aims and changing your life.

Turn to coaching and you will achieve your aims quickly and in the most effective way. One day the word “coaching” will disappear from our lexicon completely and this technique will just become a normal way for people to treat each other at work and everywhere else.
